Map the Meal Gap

Texas ranks No. 1 in the nation in the number of people facing hunger, with nearly 5 million Texans, or 16.4% of people, experiencing food insecurity in 2022, according to a national study released recently by Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization.

The 13 counties served by the North Texas Food Bank rank as the fourth-largest area of food insecurity in the country, trailing behind only Los Angeles, New York City and Houston. Within the NTFB’s service area, nearly 778,000 individuals, or 1 in 8 people, grapple with food insecurity. Alarmingly, almost 40% of these individuals — nearly 287,000, or 1 in 5 — are children.

Food insecurity rose in 2022 after pandemic-era programs expired and record-high inflation drove up food and other prices. Food insecurity is a result of economic inequality, where households do not earn enough money to regularly afford food.
